I'll use my heart disease problem, since it fits into one of the potential categories. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women in the U.S. There are many relatively easy ways to decrease the risk of this disease, and I think if people were aware not only of the means with which to avoid it, but also more clearly why they should avoid it, then we could manage this problem much better. I think a lot of times we make poor short-term decisions based off of what is easiest for us today, without thinking about the impact it could have on us tomorrow, and I think this is one of the things driving heart disease up so high.
A clear, initial situation: 1.) There is a high divorce rate in this country.
A clearly defined goal: 2.) Decreasing the percentage of divorces.
A defined set of resources: 3.) Pre-marital counseling; interviews with married couples; books; community support and other networks.
Ownership: 4.) Being married, I have a personal interest in solving this problem, as well as, personal experiences to reference and relate to this problem.
Budget cuts in schools. To me, this should be the last budget cut because kids are ou future, yet their future is made at a cheap price. How are they supposed to fix our mistakes if their education is not going to educate them to think beyond the box. Our goal would be to begin increasing the budget for education, while bringing in teachers and staff that have a clear understanding of their position and goal. We would need money of course as well as support from staff, parents and the government. This problem is the reponsibility of the nation, of the people who need a change. We all need to realize that we need to learn and progress together.
Kelly Lyons: Your are right about heart disease. Not many people know the risks and issues that are associated with the heart. And that is the downfall to many people. I know companies like Bayer are trying to create and awareness, although it is to benefit their wallet, what are ways you think would be better to create awareness?
Khaleeyah: I agree with you completely. I think that with things like "The Divorce Store" and lawyers advertising their trade on TV, I think alot of people only use divorce as a quick solution to a way out. Although the problems may be real in a marriage, people should have a good go at solving them before attempting divorce. There is no meaning anymore behind the vows made.
I haven't perfectly defined my problem yet, but I wanted to comment on Jessica's problem, I totally agree that education is surprisingly undervalued and I think what we pay for is what we get. It's sad that so little money goes to education, I find it shocking and I think it reflects the selfishness and greed of people in this country.
My original problem seems trivial compared to others that have been brought up. But I'll go ahead & restate it in proper format since it does actually fit the theme we discussed last week of creating a healthy culture.
SITUATION: A large percentage of youth, and many adults, are not utilizing their limited time in becoming well rounded healthy indiviudals. They are absorbed in various technologies almost to the exclusion of everything else. When excessive, these activities don't help them achieve their potential, can negatively impact family relationships and is a loss to society.
GOAL: Inspire and motivate people to live balanced lives in order to become the best they can be and contribute to society. Show them this can feel even better than just being entertained. Jump start their imaginations as to other things they can do.
RESOURCES: Educate people with studies, statistics, surveys and personal experience. This would require money, advertising, word of mouth. Provide powerful written & spoken word to inspire a desire to change & the motivation to do so.
OWNERSHIP: I feel the need to encourage myself & others to make a positive difference in the world. Seeing the incredible waste of time and talent is tragic.
As I said before my problem is that today in society many individuals are stressed out due to time and the main thing about this specific problem is that it affects anyones health negativally.
Khaleeyah, Teaching how to have healthy marriages is one of the most important topics in our culture today. Society unravels as families fall apart. It's one of the main reasons I'm studying communication.
Jessica, I agree that great education is CRITICAL. When I wrote a research paper on 'Excellence in Gifted Education' I discovered that in Russia Teachers used to be paid more than doctors or lawyers and their title was "Guardians of the National Treasure". They understood the power & influence given to the people moulding the minds of their children.
I also agree that education is critical, especially in light of additional budget cuts to the three state funded universities here in AZ. How is America ever going to improve anything if education is more focused upon.
I definitely agree, I have always thought it ironic that society complains about the lack of education in the newer generations. When I started going to college, some ten plus years ago, I laughed about the expense and thought "no wonder so many kids do not have a higher education!"

I agree that stress is one of the number one causes of many illnesses and conditions. I personally stress often and ALWAYS have something physically wrong with me. I also think that this topic relates to mine in that personal stress can spill over into a relationship and cause serious problems.
