Last semester I was enrolled in a machining class where we had to learn how to read prints as well as draw them. We were taught how to draw blue prints by hand and I must say that it was a daunting task. It was time consuming and I hated it. It wasn’t until the end of the semester that we switched over to the electronic version of creating drawings. I guess the department decided to spend some money on the licenses, anyways, the difference was astronomical. Answering the question, I think it will speed up the process of making blue prints. It only took 1 hour to complete a task that would usually take 10 if you were doing it by hand. If there needs to be corrections, they can be made by a click of a button rather than having to erase and perhaps redraw the entire thing. It has been very effective, and like ICT systems, I learned and built upon the previous work of others, I appreciate that I was taught both means of creating a drawing but I prefer the cost effectiveness of IT tools and I think it will only continue to advance as the technology becomes more sophisticated.
I think the ICT systems are great and the fact that they are making them more cost affective is going to make course work so much easier. Especially getting into the teaching field, I think they will serve a great deal of people in education.
Fidel's comment reminded me a a scene in the movie 'Life as a House' in which the main character is fired for being 'old fashioned' and sticking to a classic aproach of model making, while the rest of the company attempts to adapt to new digital ways of creating models.
It also made me think as far as my field goes, in preserving and restoring films as well as making classics more available to the public, the advances would have a great impact. So long as there is still an apreciation and respect for previous methods, I do believe that certain advances can save much time and money and be a postive thing.
In the dental field things are being affected by the information age. Radiographs can be done in digital. When you take them they come up on the computer so you can see right away if you got what you wanted to see. Scheduling is being done by computer. One of my offices has no appointment book on paper at all. At that same office the patient's chart is on the computer at each workstation.
In the art field digital programs are starting to become more and more practical when creating work. Corel Painter is a digital art program that can simulate the appearance and behavior of traditional media like drawing, painting, and printmaking pretty accurately.
So what that means is that you can basically make a 5x6 foot painting on your computer at the cost of the program rather than having to deal with buying brushes, an easel, a 5x6 foot canvas, and dealing with the messiness of working with actual paint.
And even though you're painting digitally the program treats painting like it's the real thing. Throughout your digital painting, you can see simulated brush strokes throughout the piece that look like real ones.
So the increasing popularity of digital tools like Painter makes painting cheaper and more convenient in the long run. Rather than storing several canvases in your house you can just store several files on your computer.
I agree with the author when he stated that “Throughout each day, you make decisions that will impact on your future. From time to time, you make large decisions that you know will have a significant impact on your future. Predictions about the future are usually based on having good knowledge about the past and present.” I think by deciding to attend ASU to further our education we have made an important decision, which can be beneficial provided we utilize the resources provided to us. I believe as students we are interested in our future and I think it is important for us to have an understanding of our environment and how it works in order to make informed choices that will affect the way you live.
In education you have basic text book instruction that you must follow, but then you also have new tools that can help a teacher in presenting the information. Powerpoint presentations, movie clips, internet searching, and online lesson plans. All of these tech tools makes it easier on the teacher.
